The Other Side...?

Comedian Dan Atkinson established the Other Side Comedy Club in York in 2001. It still runs every Sunday at The City Screen, providing the city with one of its most treasured night outs; go there if you get the chance. Huge respect for Dan for allowing us to trade with the same name, and to double up on acts, he really is a top bloke.

In October 2003 we launched in Scarborough, and have been thrilled with a stream of full houses ever since, providing antidote for all those who say nothing ever happens in this part of the world. In February we launched in Whitby to more critical acclaim, and in summer 2004 we opened in Bridlington. In 2006 we opened new clubs in Scunthorpe, Doncaster and Grimsby. 2007 sees Hull and Louth join the happy family, and we're currently planning Berlin, Paris and Rome, so if anyone knows of anyone with a tank that would help.

Our audiences are warm and diverse, ranging from teenagers to the retired, making it a unique night with a special atmosphere. Comics who visit tell us that it’s a gem of a club. That is credit to you. Long may it continue.

Jon Reed

JON REED
RESIDENT COMPERE

Jon Reed was once a hot shot, a player and contender, a bright new thing of British Comedy. Former Hackney Empire New Act of the Year, and a Perrier Nominee for Best Newcomer. Then he moved to Scarborough…. Do you see where it all went wrong? Come and see how failure and lifestyle have ravaged this mans life.

From his days on the circuit here are some of the glorious things the critics said:

‘Truly madly funny. Not so much a stream of consciousness as a tidal wave of deranged brilliance’
THE EXPRESS

‘A tour de force of absurdist multi-media anarchy’
THE STAGE

‘The greatest discovery of the festival ….if you wanted to see the unexpected he’s your man…one of the most original and exciting things you are likely to see on the fringe this year’
THE TIMES

‘The show raises many questions, including several relating to it’s creators sanity’
THE SCOTSMAN

‘Like the antics of students cavorting in a junk shop on drugs’
THE SCOTSMAN

‘Jon Reed should be congratulated on his bravery and originality. There can’t be many comics who have the guts to stage such a bizarre head-trip as this show..genuine invention and truly inspired’
EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS

‘Acts like Jon Reed and The Mighty Boosh show just how exciting comedy can be’
SUNDAY TIMES

‘His show is so original and weird it deserves to be encouraged’
INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

‘The fringe’s great yet-to-be discovered madman. The closest thing yet seen to a Terry Gillian cartoon live on stage. Reed is incredibly funny and oddly disturbing’
THE TIMES

‘Occasionally he’s still quite good’
EVERYONE 2004
